It’s 3:05 on a Tuesday afternoon. About twenty people are sitting dispersed at a few tables, having conversations and laughing. ‘Vrrrr’ hum the machines in the corner of the room. Around one table, five people surround a half-built robot, putting wires and motors on it.
It’s no surprise that people love the Guerin Fabrication Lab. There you’ll find a flourishing community and a million fun things to do.
And this year, it’s more popular than ever.
“There is a significant increase in people using the lab,” said Mr. Bruce Dominguez, Fabrication Lab manager and Robotics coach.
Among the most popular activities: using the Guerin’s machines for school projects.
“Architecture and Fashion classes get a lot of use (out of the Guerin),” said Coach Dominguez.
Architecture classes in particular conduct a lot of work at the Guerin.
“It’s almost built into their curriculum where they make study models (using the Guerin),” said Coach Dominguez.
What’s more, the Guerin is home to more than just design based classes.
“We’ve also worked with English, History, and also the Jewish studies classes,” said Coach Dominguez.
The Guerin is also a popular hang out spot before and after school. Many students meet there after school to relax and get work done.
“It’s become a bit of a hangout spot for students to generally meet, to congregate, and work on homework,” said Coach Dominguez. “I like to think of it as a safe space to be able to be productive.”
Any students – not just the robotics team or architecture students – are invited to become part of the Guerin experience.
“I encourage that even if they aren’t fabricating… they’re being productive and working towards something,” said Coach Dominguez.
