On November 6, at a specially designated town meeting, Milken students had the honor of hearing a speech by Mr. Yuli Edelstein, Israel’s Minister of Public Diplomacy and Diaspora Affairs.

In his oration, Edelstein touched upon the idea of miracles, stemming from the current celebration of Hanukkah; he cited the existence of the State of Israel and the use of Hebrew throughout Israel and the Diaspora as examples of modern day miracles.

Afterwards, he met with a group of past and soon-to-be Tiferet Israel Fellows, who discussed their experiences on the trip and how it deepened their connections to Israel. He also sat down with a smaller group of students of Russian heritage to talk about Russian-Jewish identity.

“Given that Milken strives to promote a strong connection with Israel, having the Minister come talk to us, and learn from us, is an incredible experience,” Ms. Alisha Pedowitz, Director of Israel Programs, said.

Edelstein came to Milken with the intent of gaining more knowledge about the school, specifically about the special programs that aim to develop students’ relationship with Israel.

Mrs. Metuka Benjamin, Director of Education at the Stephen S. Wise schools, who was contacted by Edelstein, orchestrated the visit.

“Israel is a pillar in our school,” Benjamin said in the post-Town meeting student discussion, “and so this is an experience that will remain with our students for a long time.”
