Dr. Alejandra Vargas has dreamt of being a teacher for as long as she can remember. After majoring in literature at Claremont McKenna College and receiving her English language and literature Ph.D. at Florida State University, Vargas excitingly dove into her teaching career.

Vargas has been teaching English for the last twelve years, mainly eighteenth and nineteenth century British literature. At Milken, she is currently teaching African American literature and two ninth grade English courses that include poetry in their curriculum.

“I love, love, love teaching poetry! Sometimes we can spend an entire class on a single line of poetry, and just go very deep into it,” she said.

Outside of class, Vargas enjoys salsa dancing, watching old films with her fiancé and embarking on challenging hikes. Vargas spent this past summer attempting to improve her hiking skills on Mount Lowe in Pasadena.

Vargas enjoys the friendly atmosphere at Milken and is excited to settle in.
