Chemistry cook off

Our science teachers have a passion for being scientific in and out of the classroom, where they use their methodical skills to cook delectable dishes.

Ever since Leigh Fauber, Concpets of Chemistry and Physics (CPC) teacher and Science Research adviser, was a little girl, she has had an ardor for fine foods.

Fauber would indulge in her mom’s Southern-style home-made dishes: chicken dumplings, yellow rice, and other comfort foods.

“Paula Deen is probably my favorite chef. She’s southern and I’m southern; we both have the common love of butter and anything fat and fried,” Fauber said.

The October and November months provide seasonal fruits and vegetables, inspiring Fauber to bake pumpkin bread, pumpkin gooey cake, and butter cake.

In her spare time, Ms. Melissa Morlok, Honors Chemistry and AP Chemistry teacher, enjoys cooking for her family and friends.

“Holidays were a particularly big deal in my house, so I’m much more of a baker than a cook because of that,” Morlok said.

Her all time favorite recipe is her moist, mouth-watering smore brownies.

Morlock enjoys watching Top Chef, Next Iron Chef, Everyday Italian, and Giada At Home on the Food Network.

The science faculty members enjoy having potlucks, but lately have been trying to cutback on unhealthy foods by limiting the amount of delicious cakes and cookies they consume.

“One of our requirements for all science teacher candidates is their ability to cook. We love to eat, and we love it when people cook for us,” Fauber said.

Included below is Morlok’s smore brownies recipe.

2 boxes of (kosher) brownie mix (or you can substitute your favorite from-scratch brownie recipe)

1 bag of large (kosher) marshmallows

1 sleeve of (kosher) graham crackers

1. Grease a 9×13 baking dish. (Line with greased parchment paper for ease of removal)

2. Preheat Oven to 350

3. Mix the brownies according to the directions on the box.

4. Pour half of your brownie batter into the prepared pan.

5. Add a single layer of graham crackers.

6. Add a single layer of marshmallows.

7. Pour the remaining brownie batter over the top.

8. Bake for 40-45 minutes or until toothpick comes mostly clean from center.  (With my oven it takes longer.

9.  Remove from oven and let cool completely.  Carefully remove foil and brownies from pan.  Peel any foil from away from edges and cut into squares.

Enjoy!
