After thirteen years at Milken, Mr. Jason Ablin, head of school, will be leaving Milken at the end of the school year and will begin working at Shalhevet, another Los Angeles private Jewish high school.
The announcement was made to the Shalhevet community on January 27. Although the Milken community has yet to be officially notified, the news has come as a shock to students and teachers alike.
“I was really surprised to find out that Mr. Ablin is leaving, and he’ll definitely be missed,” Marisa Holt ’13 said.
Ablin made the decision only after careful consideration and conference with the Milken administration.
“It’s a long conversation we’ve been having, it was mutually agreed upon,” Ablin said. “The next head is going to be immersed in a lot of the larger educational issues – things we never had to be responsible for before because they were all done in conjunction with the temple.”
At Shalhevet Ablin will be in charge of curriculum and staff development, essentially the same areas he currently oversees at Milken. His ultimate goal is to turn Shalhevet into a place that prepares students for the twenty-first century.
“I started my career at YULA, worked at Milken and now I’m moving on to another Jewish school in LA. I hope that I’ll have had a really positive impact at the end of my career on Jewish education in Los Angeles, and that’s really powerful for me,” Ablin said.
