On Saturday, January 14, Milken history will be made as the first ever Winter Formal will take place. The event will be held at the Skirball Cultural Center in the Ahmanson ballroom. Headlining Winter Formal will be DJ MILES, whose work can be heard on 102.7 KIIS FM. The theme for the event is “Winter Wonderland,” which, according to student body president Ami Fields-Meyer ’12, means that there will be “twinkle lights and a psychedelic winter light effect.” In addition, a streaming chocolate fountain will be present, a welcome change from the frozen yogurt provided by Menchies the last few years.

The change from ball to formal was not a decision made lightly, as the executive board of student government weighed the pros and cons of each type of dance. Ultimately, the board felt that going with something new and exciting would be a better experience for the Milken student body.

“We thought that a formal would be a great thing for Milken because no one has ever experienced a Milken event quite like this before,” student body vice president Jonah Schatz ’13 said.

Many students have welcomed the change from Winter Ball to Winter Formal for a variety of reasons. Maddy Siegel ’13 is elated because she will finally get to “have the quintessential high school experience.”

“I have always wanted to have a Formal,” she said. “I am so happy Milken is going to have one now.”

Some students have also noted the excitement of dressing up formally as opposed to a club dress code, while others are eager to find a date to accompany them.

Sam Walfish ’13 has turned to humor amidst his hunt for a Formal date.

“I don’t understand why I don’t have a date yet,” he said. “It’s not like I’m that ugly, why do girls run away when I try to talk to them? Will anyone go with me?”

He also inquired as to the specific rules of the event, asking, “Can I take a middle schooler with me?”

The dance will take place from 7:30 to 10:30 PM with Alon Winter ’14 (DJ Winterfresh) turning tables until DJ MILES comes on at 8:00 PM. The dress code for the event is formal and students are allowed to bring dates from out of school. Tickets are being sold for $35 at the amphitheater every day this week during lunch.
