Spotlight Athlete: Josh Simmons ’12

Josh Simmons ’12 has been a leader both on and off the field for the highly anticipated tackle football team.
As running back on offense and outside linebacker on defense, Simmons has lived up to high expectations. With a body built like a football player and the correct attitude, his teammates often joke about him winning the Heisman trophy.
Simmon’s elementary school coach opened his eyes to the idea of football, but he never thought tackle football would be an option.
“There’s something about it you just can’t get from non-contact sports, and the danger involved makes it so much more alluring. I’ve grown to love the sport and the rush I feel when running through tackles,” Simmons said.
Although a huge commitment, Simmons feels it is all worthwhile, as he loves his newfound “hero status” to the underclassmen.
The other players on the team also have much respect for the star running back.
“Josh Simmons is a true example of how to be both a great person and a player. Not only is he a phenomenal athlete but he is humbled by it all,” teammate Gabe Freeman ’13 said.
This year, Simmons has eight touchdowns, 600+ running yards and an average of seven tackles per game.
Simmons has thought about the idea of playing college football, but ultimately would rather keep his body healthy and focus on school. Simmons’ presence will surely be missed next season as he is a true asset to the team and a great leader as well.
