Halloween, candy corn, and autumn leaves mark the end of October every year. This year, though, at the end of October, Milken will be completely immersed in the interdisciplinary arts festival. The Math, Spanish, and Art Departments have been working together to plan the most unique and memorable Arts Festival yet. The art and math students will be doing a Picasso inspired cubist chalk drawing in the amphitheater. A group of Spanish students will interact with the artists and write up an art review in Spanish talking about the color, style and their impressions of the chalk drawing.
Cubism is a movement inspired by Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque, influenced by Native American and African art. In cubist artworks, objects are broken up and reassembled in an abstracted form where shapes often intersect at random angles. These random angles defy perspective and create a depth illusion that characterizes cubist art. Picasso’s first step towards Cubism was in his painting, “Les Demoiselles d’Avignon” of five female figures. Two of these figures wear African mask-like faces on a two-dimensional picture frame. By this painting, Picasso defies traditional art and inspires the cubist movement.
The Fall Arts Festival starts on Monday, October 24, and runs through Friday, October 28. On the first four days the students from all of the arts electives will create the chalk drawing on the Amphitheater floor. The Arts Festival will culminate with an Arts Elective Fair, where you will see all of the art students displaying their art as well as creating new art. The National Arts Honors Society is sponsoring the event and will be doing face painting and giving out tasty treats. We look forward to seeing you all there!
