Milken hosted its third annual grandparents’ L’Dough V’Dough event on Thursday, March 27, 2025. The event’s name combines the Jewish concept of “L’dor V’dor” (Passing Things on From Generation to Generation) and the word “dough” for the baking aspect of the event. It engaged grandparents throughout the Milken Community to come together and make challah with their grandchildren while listening to the story of a Holocaust survivor.
Milken works with the Holocaust Museum of Los Angeles to invite survivors to share their story to as many people as they can. Anyone in the community can attend this event, and the information is spread out through the Milken Newsletter. Milken’s first grandparents L’dough V’dough hosted 60 people but has grown to over 150 attendees at the recent event.
Alexandra Kadoshe, the Director of Development at Milken, headed this event. She stated that Milken values families’ connection with grandparents, and the school hosts different events to get them involved with the community.
“It’s really important to us that we bring in grandparents and have a lot of opportunities for them to engage with our families and our students on campus,” Kadoshe said.
The Holocaust survivor at this event was Joe Samules, who as a child escaped from Iraq to Iran during WWII. He shared his story through a slideshow with pictures of his life from the past and where he stayed. His story specifically stuck with the Milken grandparents from Iran who escaped during the Revolution and who attended the event. .
“The grandparents were crying and going up to him, kissing him, and bringing back memories from when their families immigrated,” Kadoshe said.
Junior Sophie Skolnik, head of the Student L’dough V’dough program, emphasized the amount of planning that went into this event.
“It takes many people to coordinate the event, whether it is organizing the materials, sending out invitations, and managing the group,” Skolnik said.
Besides L’dough V’dough , there are many more ways for grandparents to be involved throughout Milken. Grandparents can volunteer at the Milken Mart, visit the art shows, or join the Grandparent Society, which offers exclusive events just for grandparents of students in the community.
