Everyone looks forward to break especially since Milken students haven’t had one in forever. Sitting in any class and on any day can sometimes be boring. You are looking at the clock every five minutes, your back kills from sitting in uncomfortable chairs for so long, and the desire to go home fills up your mind. Milken students are very eager for a break especially since the last one was forever ago. Their spring break begins on April 20.
Most public schools had their spring break in March or very early April, which is reasonable because Spring started on March 19th. For instance, Palisades Charter High School went on break March 25th and Beverly Hills High School on April 1st. This leaves Milken students working very hard, knowing other kids are on a beach in Mexico or flying across the world to Japan. The schools’ different schedules also creates a disconnect for those with friends in other schools. ”I wish we had one week of break with other schools and the second week later on,” declares Lola Braun ‘26. All the plans of hanging out during the week are now unable to be made, causing Milken students to miss out on making great memories with their other friends. However, there is a slight upside to all of this. Spring Break for us will be two full weeks while all those other schools only had a week.
What is the reason Milken’s break is later than usual this year? Passover. This holiday determines the dates of Spring Break. In recent years, Passover would happen earlier in the year so spring break wouldn’t seem so late. De Toledo, Shalhevet, and YULA are in the same boat as us. All Jewish schools have their spring breaks during Passover.
But there is a small upside. In March, three weeks are going to be four day weeks making one weekend a four day weekend. The school also hosted a de-stress activity for students to stop by and hang out with puppies on the second to last day before break. Many students enjoyed this since the last week before break has been very stressful and filled with assessments.
After spring break, the tenth graders only had three weeks left of actual school. Two of those weeks are going to be filled with preparations for finals, which many find unfair since sophomores last year didn’t have finals and just had their last unit exam worth more. For them, the administration decided to have two finals day on May 23 and 24 covering math, science, Jewish studies, and hHebrew. May 24 will be the last day these students step into Milken as sophomores as they will depart to Europe on May 26.
Spring break is also a sort of end of high school for seniors. In the second week of break they will be leaving for March of the Living and returning on May 9. Leaving them only with AP exams and finals.
Remaining grades will have three weeks left and one more week of finals. That’s how the final month of the 2023-2024 school year will plan out. “I don’t get how the school year is already over,” utters Sabrina Bolour ‘26.
