In a move that came as a surprise to many in the Milken community, Santa Monica College (SMC) has been renamed “Milken South.” This change came in the wake of Milken’s purchase of the American Jewish University and renaming of it to “Milken East.”
“It wasn’t for any specific reason,” said Milken’s 11-12 Division Head Mr. Lindsay. “We’re not going to turn it into a new campus, or build sports facilities there. It just simply felt like the logical next step.”
An anonymous administrator at Milken South seemed optimistic about the rebrand: “We think at least one parent will enroll their ninth grader here instead of normal Milken four years early.” SMC has a reputation for being a popular alternative to a four-year university for Milken graduates.
The reaction from Milken’s current student body, however, signals that this purchase may curb that trend. Caleb Mamos ‘24 said “I assume I would have to wear Milken Merch there. I mean, I don’t wear it anyway, but still.” Whether or not Milken South will actually put that policy into effect is yet to be seen, but one thing is for certain: This won’t be the end of Milken’s expansion. “We’re looking into purchasing the Glen Centre to rename it Milken More East,” said Mr. Lindsay, “and we’re not stopping there.”
