On Monday, September 26, Milken’s Jewish Leadership Board (JLB) placed eight journals around Milken’s campus as the first step of its Book of Life campaign.

Each journal has a prompt about the Jewish new year. Students were asked to respond to theses prompts through writing, poetry and art. Once they had responded, they left the journal in a public space for another student to find.

“The goal is to get students thinking about what changes they want to make in the upcoming year: How we can better ourselves in order to positively influence the world around us?” Jodi Marcus ’14, head of the JLB Rosh Hashanah committee, said.

Students not only actively participated in the activity, but were greatly influenced by it as well.

“Writing in the Book of Life helped me define in a few sentences my major goals for the year,” Yakov Mamzhi ’13 said. “I could also relate to other peoples’ goals.”

Now, after Yom Kippur, the JLB has set up a drop box location near the Jewish studies workroom. At the end of the year, the journals will be included in a public art display.
