New design class to begin fall 2012

As we approach the end of the school year, we look forward to the changes that will be present upon returning to school in September.
The art department has been collaborating with Debra Sokolow, Architecture Design and Visual Arts teacher, and her idea for a new art course. An agreement has been reached and now a new, two semesters Design class, starting in the fall of 2012, will be offered to Milken students
“Design I & II is intended for students interested in fashion, product, graphic and architectural design,” Explains Sokolow.
This course opens the eyes of students to designing using lines, tones, objects, portraits, and figures and environmental drawings. This class is designed to help students build artistic confidence by having class discussions, critiques, and in class presentations.
“The course focuses on the skills necessary for designers and thinkers of today, the innovators of tomorrow. This course satisfies the prerequisite for Architectural Design, and Fine Arts Studio and hopefully courses in Fashion and Product Design.” Says Sokolow.
The class incorporates use of charcoal, graphite, pastel, colored pencils, markers, water media, and paints. Students will learn to use different materials and will get to explore how to use recycled and reusable materials. They will look at historic and contemporary designs.
The goal of this course is to expand the Architecture and Design Institute to include Product Design, Marketing, and Fashion, giving students a real feel of what it’s like to be in the world of design.
